Making Sense of Car Safety Ratings

The folks at Jaguar Tulsa want you to understand how crash safety test results are determined. Both the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) perform such tests. However, there are key differences between the two groups. First, the NHTSA is a government agency while the IIHS is a private agency.

Another key difference is that the NHTSA uses a star system while the IIHS rates cars using words such as poor, good and excellent. Generally speaking, both agencies provide an accurate overview of how safe a vehicle is. Therefore, if you are concerned about safety, look at all the ratings available.

If the two groups have similar ratings on a vehicle, you can trust that the vehicle is safe. If the two groups have differing opinions, it may be a good idea to look at other vehicles on your list.
